Heads Of Gov't Branches Issue Joint Statement Condemning Congress Riots

BRAZIL

The heads of the four main branches of the Brazilian gov't have issued a joint statement condemning the 'terrorist acts' committed by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro in the storming of gov't buildings in Brasilia on 8 Jan.

  • The letter, signed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Acting Senate President Vital do Rego Filho, President of the Chamber of Deputies Arthur Lira, and President of the Supreme Court Judge Rosa Maria Pires Weber, seeks to offer a joint and united response to the incident that saw troops arrest hundreds of Bolsonaro supporters.
  • "The powers of the republic, defenders of democracy and the 1988 constitutional charter, reject the terrorist acts, vandalism, criminals and coup [attempt] that took place yesterday afternoon in Brasilia. We are united so that institutional measures are taken in accordance with Brazilian laws. We call on society to maintain serenity, in defense of peace and democracy in our homeland. The country needs normality, respect and work for the progress and social justice of the nation."
