Heavier US Crude Supply As Shale Supply Growth Stalls: Kpler

OIL

US crude supply is becoming heavier as output of medium-heavy density crudes remains robust but shale supply growth stalls according to Kpler.

  • Shale supply growth is stalling due to a slowdown in upstream activity as both the frac spread and oil rig count remain pressured due to elevated costs, shareholders demands and an uncertain outlook.
  • The trend towards heavier US production will continue in Q3 with support from seasonally rising supply from Alaska, and new developments keeping Gulf of Mexico supply above year-ago levels in 2023.
  • Upstream activity in the Permian Basin, the largest producing shale region, has begun falling strongly in June and July, and is now threatening future supply.
