HELP Committee To Vote On Su Nomination For Labor Sec Today

10:00 ET 15:00 BST: The Senate Heath, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee will meet for an executive session today to vote on Julie Su's nomination to become President Biden’s new Labor Secretary.

  • The committee is expected to approve her nomination but it is currently unclear if Su has the support of moderate Democrat Senators ahead of a full Senate vote, despite the fact the Senate previously confirmed Su as Deputy Labor Secretary in 2021.
  • Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA), ranking Republican on the HELP Committee, said: “They can pass it on a party-line vote, but I think there’s a reasonable chance it fails on the floor.”
  • Republicans will vote unanimously against Su’s nomination and the continued absence of Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) means Su can't afford to drop any votes from Democrat aligned Senators.
  • The most likely "no" votes comes from centrist Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV), Jon Tester (D-MT), and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) - all vulnerable incumbents facing difficult re-election bids.
  • A White House official confirmed that Su has met with Tester and said, “we are in touch with Manchin’s office...”
