Herzog Pushes Judicial Reform Deal As IAF Chiefs Warn Of Security Risk

ISRAEL

Speaking to a meeting of of over 100 gov't officials, including mayors and local council leaders, President Isaac Herzog has stated that there is the prospect of an agreement on judicial reforms that could seek to end weeks of protest and political tension that have rattled financial markets and been talked about as a threat to the social fabric of Israel.

  • I24 News reportsthat "We are closer than ever to the possibility of an agreed outline. There are agreements behind the scenes on most things. Now it depends on our national leadership, the coalition and the opposition, [...]who will put the country and the citizens above everything else?"
  • Herzog: "We are in a historic crisis that threatens to destroy us from within. We are in one of the most difficult moments that the State of Israel has experienced. [...]No missiles, no alarms, no red alert. But we all know deep down that this is a supreme national danger,"
  • The president's plan comes as reservists in the Israeli Air Force refuse to turn up for service in protest at the gov'ts planned reforms, resulting in a rare letter from all the living former IAF chiefs to the PM expressing their concerns at the impact of the reforms on Israeli security.
