Hezbollah Leader-Iran Response To Damascus Strike 'Definitely Coming'

In a televised address for Iran's Quds Day, Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah claimsthat the strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus that killed seven senior IRGC officers marks a 'turning point" in the post-Oct 7 landscape and that an Iranian response was 'definitely coming'.

  • The nature and timing of the Iranian response is being closely watched in Israel and internationally. An increase in attacks on Israel across the border with Lebanon from Hezbollah could prove one of the most likely forms of retaliation.
  • Iran-backed Hezbollah has significant military supplies and would be able to launch a significant wave of rocket and missile attacks on Israel if it was instructed. A major escalation along the Lebanese border risks Israel fighting on two fronts, against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in the north. Any such conflict would also be of a different nature, and for Israel much more costly, given Hezbollah's significantly greater numbers and more advanced weaponry compared to Hamas.
