House Of Representatives Speaker Vote Underway

US

The House of Representatives is now taking formal nominations for Speaker ahead of a roll call of House Reps to determine whether Republican Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) will become the next Speaker of the House.

  • Events on the floor can be followed here: C-SPAN
  • Rep Elise Stefanik (R-NY) opened the proceedings by nominating Jordan and citing the Hamas attacks on Israel as compelling swift action to elect a speaker.
  • A quorum found that 432 members of the House are present, meaning Jordan can only stand to lose four votes (217 total required).
  • As it stands, most Congressional reporters believe that Jordan is unlikely to win in the first ballot. Should Jordan fail to win in the first ballot, it is understood that Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-NC) will have final say on whether to pursue additional ballots;.
  • More analysis on the vote and a potential Jordan speakership in today's edition of our US Daily Brief.
