House Republicans May Hold Biden Impeachment Inquiry Vote This Week

US

House Republicans are expected to press ahead with a vote to authorise impeachment inquiries into President Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas as soon as this week.

  • Any impeachment process would certainly be quashed by the Senate, and is not even guaranteed to pass the House due to concerns from moderate Republicans, but would provide a useful foil for the GOP as they seek to offset political fallout from former President Trump's legal issues on the 2024 general election campaign trail.
  • House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told Fox News yesterday: “I believe we will [have the votes to launch a formal impeachment inquire]. I suspect no Democrats will assist in this effort, but they should.” Johnson added that Republicans “have a duty to do this” and “we cannot stop the process.”
  • House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) told Fox News on Sunday: “I’m confident we’re going to have the votes to move forward with this impeachment inquiry.”
  • White House spokesperson Ian Sams said in a statement: “This is a baseless, politically-motivated attempt to smear President Biden with lies, and it reflects how this chaotic House GOP is focused on the wrong priorities...”
  • Should the GOP authorise the impeachment processes, it would mark another major acceleration in the use of impeachment as a political weapon. It is particularly notable in the case of Mayorkas considering the only cabinet member to have ever been impeached was William Belknap in 1876.
