House Republicans To Begin Internal Voting On Speaker Today

US

10:00 ET 15:00 BST: House Republicans will meet to try to nominate their candidate for the next speaker of the House of Representatives. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) remain the frontrunners. A full floor vote appears unlikely today considering the extent of dysfunction within the caucus.

  • House Republicans will first vote on a proposal introduced by Rep Chip Roy (R-TX) to raise the threshold for selecting a candidate to 217. Supporters of this proposal believe it will minimise the risk of another public display of disunity, like in January. Opponents of the proposal, including Scalise, believe that the measure risks an extended paralysis of the conference.
  • If the Roy proposal isn’t adopted, a simple majority will send the winning candidate to the floor for a full House vote, likely Thursday at the earliest.
  • Jordan is ahead in the endorsement count. If he wins the gavel, it would represent a major directional change for the House and deepen conservative control of the chamber.
  • Jordan yesterday attempted to ease concerns that dysfunction would increase under his leadership by committing to passing a stopgap funding measure to prevent a government shutdown. Notably, Scalise declined to make a similar pledge.
