US-CHINA: House Rules Package To Extend China Select Cmte Through Next Congress

US-CHINA

The rules package to govern the US House of Representatives through the next Congress includes language to extend the House Select Committee on “strategic competition” between the US and the Chinese Communist Party for an additional two years.

  • The rules bill reads: “The investigative jurisdiction of the Select Committee shall consist of policy recommendations on countering the economic, technological, security, and ideological threats of the [CCP] to the [US] and allies and partners of the United States.”
  • Committee Chair Rep John Moolenaar (R-MI) said: “I introduced legislation to finally revoke China’s privileged trade status with the United States, restoring fair and reciprocal trade for our businesses and workers. We have also taken aim at China’s dominance of critical minerals [and] worked together to introduce legislation that will safeguard America’s supply chains and reduce our economy’s dependence on the CCP”. Moolenaar issued a longer video statement on X today.
  • Politico reported this week that the committee, “risks losing momentum and falling into irrelevance amid partisan infighting on the panel, legislative dysfunction and signs of significant disagreement with Donald Trump and Elon Musk.”
  • Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), the ranking Democrat on the panel, said: “China week became weak on China” after a series of policy recommendations forwarded by the panel were watered down by GOP leadership in December.
  • The House of Representatives will vote on the rules package following the election of a new speaker, scheduled to commence at 12:00 ET 17:00 GMT tomorrow.
