Housing Minister Escapes Impeachment Vote In Lower House

  • Chile’s Chamber of Deputies voted to reject an attempt to remove Housing Minister Carlos Montes, who had been accused of wrongdoing in relation to “Caso Convenios,” which is a probe into payments between public institutions and foundations.
  • A total of 79 lower house deputies voted against advancing in hearing in-depth arguments against Montes, while 61 voted to continue and one abstained.
  • Montes stated that “I am calm because here it was proven that the constitutional accusation had no technical or political basis”, speaking after the decision.
  • Montes reiterated that he never thought of taking a step aside, which he said would have been the easiest move and took the opportunity to emphasise that “the Ministry of Housing is not a corrupt ministry”.
