EU-RUSSIA: Hungary Min-Need To Discuss Sanctions w/Trump Admin Before Rollover

EU-RUSSIA

Reuters reports comments from Hungary's Minister for European Union Affairs János Bóka. Says that the Hungarian gov't has not yet decided whether to support the rollover of EU sanctions due at the end of January. Says that the decision should only come after discussions with the incoming administration of US President-elect Donald Trump.

  • The deadline for agreeing to roll over sanctions on Russia for another six months is 31 January. RFE/RL wrote on 14 Jan, "It's not clear what Hungary [...] wants in return for signing off on the rollover, i.e. whether it would want sanctions to be watered down or whether Budapest could access EU funds that have been frozen because of its spotty record on democracy."
  • Bloomberg reported on 15 Jan that the EU was considering a gradual ban on Russian LNG and aluminium, as well as adding more vessels from Russia's 'shadow fleet' to the sanctions list and cutting off more banks from the SWIFT payment system, as part of the 16th package that the bloc is said to be looking to introduce in February to mark the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
  • As Bloomberg notes, sanctions on pipeline gas are not seen as possible due to objections from Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria. However, "Banning LNG is more feasible because the three countries that bring in the biggest share of the fuel — Spain, Belgium and France — are not expected to block punitive measures against Russia, according to the officials."
