SECURITY

Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has warned that Iran's nuclear programme is "moving ahead very, very fast and growing in ambition and capacity."

  • Grossi has made the remarks during a press briefing at the nuclear non-proliferation conference. Livestream here: https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1nAJEYplVLkJL
  • In response to a question on whether or not Iran is at the stage of developing an atomic bomb, Grossi said: "They have very ambitious technical and sophisticated nuclear programme."
  • Grossi says that he must first verify the programme before a judgement can be made on whether or not Iran has the capacity to develop a nuclear weapon at this stage.
  • Mohammad Ali Shabani at Amwaj: "IAEA Board of Governors is set to convene again in parallel with opening of the UN General Assembly. The Board passed a censure resolution against Iran at its previous June meeting. Iran has warned of drastic action if the IAEA Board refers nuclear file to UN Security Council."
  • Ali Shabani continues: "On the other hand, if another round of nuclear negotiations is held in Vienna ahead of UN General Assembly, potential progress could be further aided by a possible meeting in New York among the leaders of the remaining signatories to the Iran nuclear deal."
