IAEA Chief Grossi Warns Of Growing Iranian Nuclear Ambitions
Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has warned that Iran's nuclear programme is "moving ahead very, very fast and growing in ambition and capacity."
- Grossi has made the remarks during a press briefing at the nuclear non-proliferation conference. Livestream here: https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1nAJEYplVLkJL
- In response to a question on whether or not Iran is at the stage of developing an atomic bomb, Grossi said: "They have very ambitious technical and sophisticated nuclear programme."
- Grossi says that he must first verify the programme before a judgement can be made on whether or not Iran has the capacity to develop a nuclear weapon at this stage.
- Mohammad Ali Shabani at Amwaj: "IAEA Board of Governors is set to convene again in parallel with opening of the UN General Assembly. The Board passed a censure resolution against Iran at its previous June meeting. Iran has warned of drastic action if the IAEA Board refers nuclear file to UN Security Council."
- Ali Shabani continues: "On the other hand, if another round of nuclear negotiations is held in Vienna ahead of UN General Assembly, potential progress could be further aided by a possible meeting in New York among the leaders of the remaining signatories to the Iran nuclear deal."
