India FM-Domestic Vaccine Production For Domestic Supply

In a decision that could have major implications beyond the country's own borders, India's Foreign Secretary has said that amidst a devastating wave of infections, hospitalisations, and deaths from COVID-19 in the country that the need for vaccines is understandably 'pressing'.

  • He went onto say that domestic vaccine production will be used for domestic supply.
  • India is the world's largest single producer of vaccines, and the Serum Institute of India in Pune is a major global production centre for the AstraZeneca vaccine.
  • With a number of countries globally reliant on the AZ jab, any alteration to the scheduled delivery of vaccines could have a global impact in terms of unwinding of restrictions and an end to the pandemic.
