INDIA-Foreign Ministers Talk Globalisation, Supply Chains, Border Issues

CHINA

MNI (London)-Wires carrying comments from Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang at the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in New Delhi, India. Qin: '[We] need to promote sound development of globalisation, reject unilateralism and protectionism...[we] need to ensure the stable and smooth operation of global industrial and supply chains.'

  • Qin: '[We] hope multilateral financial institutions and commercial creditors will be actively involved in debt treatment of developing countries.'
  • Qin: 'Global affairs should be handled by all through discussion, no one should engage in power politics or even bloc confrontations.'
Qin's comments come after a meeting with Indian FM S. Jaishankar. The Indian minister stated that talks focused on addressing current challenges to the bilateral relationship, especially 'peace and tranquility' in border areas.
  • Last week, representatives from both sides met for the first time in three years regarding the contested Sino-Indian border (known as the Line of Actual Control) in the Himalayas. While firearms are not used by troops on either side (in an effort to avoid a major conflagration), hand-to-hand combat between Chinese and Indian soldiers along the LAC is not uncommon, ensuring sustained simmering tensions between the two Asian giants.
