India Looking for LNG to Help Cover Cooling Power Demand

India is looking for more LNG imports as a heat wave pushes power demand to record levels.

  • GAIL and Petronet LNG this week released tenders to buy LNG for May and June delivery according to Bloomberg with some gas expected to go to power generation.
  • Peak demand hit an all-time high earlier this week due to increased air conditioning load. Power generation in India is primarily from coal with only a small portion from gas but the increase gas supplies will help ensure electricity supply security.
  • The government asked electricity producer NTPC to increase gas-fired power generation to meet peak demand during April and May.
