Indian Gas Consumption Reached New High in 2023

NATURAL GAS

Indian gas consumption increased to a new high in 2023 with steel and other large industrials showing the largest share according to ICIS.

  • Much of the increase came from domestic gas supply and probably reflects gas from new offshore fields can be marketed more freely than other domestic gas sources.
  • Demand from fertilizer and city gas both increased in the year. City gas could need more LNG to continue growth if ONGC cannot raise its eastern offshore production.
  • Uncertainty over European and east Asian demand growth from H2 '24 to H1 '25 could upset the current balance.
