GERMAN DATA

APR FLASH HICP +0.7% M/M, +7.8% Y/Y; MAR +7.6% Y/Y

APR FLASH CPI +0.8% M/M, +7.4% Y/Y; MAR +7.3% Y/Y

  • German April inflation came in higher than analyst expectations, although earlier release state data certainly offered the possibility of an upside surprise.
  • Energy has been a big driver, according to Destatis, with energy inflation running at 35.3% y/y, slowing very slightly from March's elevated levels.
  • A similarly high inflation rate was last seen in autumn 1981, when mineral oil prices rose sharply as the first Gulf war between Iraq and Iran started.
  • The final data for April 2022 will be released on 11 May 2022, the flash Eurozone data will be published tomorrow, April 29.
