IRAN: IAEA Board Meets, Focus On Possible E3 Censure Resolution

IRAN

Wires reporting comments from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi at the Board of Governors meeting taking place in Vienna. Says that Iran has accepted the IAEA's request to stop uranium enrichment at 60% purity, and that the IAEA confirms Iran's compliance. Grossi 'urges restraint' to avoid escalating tensions.

  • Earlier, in a statement French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot "stressed the imperative that Iran implement its obligations under [IAEA] safeguards...." The French minister told Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi that Iran's "nuclear escalation" was "very worrying and carried major risks of proliferation." Barrot says that France, as part of the E3 with Germany and the UK, "is continuing its efforts to return to negotiations with Iran with a view to a diplomatic solution."
  • Iranian outlet Tasnim reports comments from Araghchi saying that Iran will "respond appropriately" if faced with "confrontation". The prospect of a censure resolution from the E3 remains present at the board meeting.
  • Laurence Norman at WSJ posts on X: "Here’s a possible pathway for E3/US pressure on Iran at IAEA board. [...] 1/ this week request a comprehensive report on Iran safeguards issues from DG. 2/ DG presents report early in 2025. 3/ Board discusses in March, June or at a special meeting? 4/Iran’s failure to address concerns leads to a non-compliance resolution in June or September, pushing issue to UNSC. 5/ After summer and with the October expiry deadline pending, E3 SnapBack sanctions under JCPOA. Of course the very big question then becomes what happens next?"
