Islamic State Claims Responsibility For Kerman Bombings

IRAN

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the two terrorist combings in the Iranian city of Kerman on 3 Jan that killed nearly 100 and injured many more. The group posed on its affiliate Telegram channels that two suicide bombers carried out the attacks against 'rejectionist polytheists'.

  • Earlier, Bloomberg wrote that "Iran had said the blasts were aimed at punishing its stance against Israel’s invasion of Gaza." However, the claiming of the attacks by the Salafi jihadist group IS paints the actions not as related to the war in Gaza (strongly opposed by both Iran and IS), but to Sunni IS' fight against Iran's Shi'ite gov't.
  • IS claiming responsibility for the bombings does not necessarily indicate a significant reduction in Middle East tensions amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, the Houthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, and the risk of escalation from Hezbollah in response to the supposed Israeli drone strike on a Hamas leader in Beirut.
