ISM Employment Components Net Out For Little Change In April

  • The ISM Services employment component shifted 0.5pts lower in April from 51.3 to 50.8, but was mostly offset by a large bounce in the previously released manufacturing equivalent from 46.9 to 50.2.
  • Using weights from the payrolls by industry, which roughly work out at 90% services/10% manufacturing, a ‘composite’ employment series saw minimal change in April from 50.8 to 50.7, down from the recent high of 53.5 in Feb but still holding above 50.
  • Ahead of Friday’s payrolls report, it’s not sufficiently different to indicate risk in either direction to the consensus call of moderating but still solid nonfarm payrolls growth of 180k.
