Ismail Sabri Brushes Away Speculation About Zahid's PM Ambitions

ASIA

Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Malaysia's caretaker Prime Minister and Vice President of the ruling United Malays National Organisation, played down speculation circulated by his rivals from the opposition suggesting that UMNO leader Zahid could become Prime Minister if the UMNO-led Barisan Nasional alliance wins the 15th general election.

  • In an interview with Free Malaysia Today, Ismail Sabri accused the opposition of spreading "fairy tales," "trying to confuse voters" and seeking to divide BN and UMNO leaders. He noted that UMNO's top decisionmaking bodies nominated him as prospective Prime Minister.
  • While UMNO leaders have publicly thrown their weight behind Ismail Sabri as the party's poster boy, some of his prominent allies were dropped from the list of candidates and replaced with Zahid's loyalists.
  • Malaysia's 15th general election (GE15) will take place on November 19.
