Ismail Sabri Refuses To Name GE15 Date Amid Flood Season Worry

Malaysia's Prime Minister Ismail Sabri is yet to decide on when to dissolve parliament, he told reporters on the fringes of the UN General Assembly. His decision will depend on the outcome of the meeting of top five UMNO leaders on September 30, in which Ismail will participate in his capacity as party Vice-President.

  • The weekend saw further voices warning against the consequences of holding a general election (GE15) during the end-of-year flood season. Environment Minister Tuan Ibrahim (PAS) said it would bot be responsible to hold an election this year, days after Health Minister Khairy (UMNO) voiced his concerns.
  • Separately, a former Election Commission (EC) chief told Malay Mail that the government would need to fork out another MYR1bn if it wanted to hold a general election in the midst of the monsoon season. The additional expenditure would be double the cost of the entire 2018 election, which might prove controversial with the voters.
