Israel, Egypt and EU Eye Gas Deal

NATURAL GAS

A trilateral agreement between Egypt, Israel and the EU is being discussed to allow the export of Israeli gas to Europe according to Israel’s energy ministry today.

  • The EU are seeking Israel as a gas partner as they scramble to diversify away from Russian flows.
  • There is no pipeline infrastructure between Israel and the EU promoting the group of nations to deliver the gas via two LNG terminal in Egypt.
  • "A pipeline from Israel to Europe does not exist, and therefore the most relevant option is to transport gas to Egypt, to its two liquefaction plants. From Egypt, it will be shipped to Europe as LNG, where it will be again gasified." According to Israeli energy ministry director general Lior Schillat.
  • "Professionals from the ministries are working to formulate a trilateral agreement between Israel, the EU, and Egypt, which will reflect the basic framework set in the existing agreement between Israel and Egypt in the matter of gas exports," Schillat said.
