Israel/Lebanon Gas Field Tensions Rise

NATURAL GAS

Israel has denied today it is encroaching on a disputed Mediterranean gas field with Lebanon.

  • Lebanese President Michel Aoun on Sunday warned Israel against drilling in the Karish offshore natural gas field, as a new gas rig arrived at the site to commence operations.
  • Israel’s defense minister said today that the natural gas deposits were a civilian issue to be resolved diplomatically with US mediation.
  • "Everything to do with the dispute will be resolved in the framework of negotiations between us and Lebanon, mediated by the United States," Defense Minister Benny Gantz said.
  • Israel said earlier today they are working on discussions with Egypt to send Israeli gas to the EU as the region tries to move away from Russian gas.
