Israeli PM Lapid: Israel Will Stop Iran From Getting Nuclear Weapon

Israel caretaker Prime Minister Yair Lapid, speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, has declared that "Israel has capabilities," and "will do whatever it takes to stop Iran getting a nuclear weapon."

  • Lapid's comments come as Western parties to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action nuclear accords express pessimism that a return to compliance can be achieved at the negotiating table.
  • Yesterday, Iran President Ebrahim Raisi said US has failed to provide assurances it needs to re-enter the accords: that a future US administration will not unilaterally withdraw, seen by Tehran as likely if Trump retakes White House in 2024.
  • Lapid has consistently opposed resurrection of the 2015 deal, telling US President Joe Biden directly during a July 14 joint presser that Israel will not be bound by a new accord, should one be ratified, and will continue to pursue a military solution to Iran's nuclear programme.
