POWER: Italy Adds 7.5GW of Renewables, 2.1GW of Storage in 2024

POWER

Italy added a record 7.5GW of renewables in 2024, bringing its total to 50GW across solar and wind, with an additional 2.1GW of small and utility-scale storage capacity added, according to data by TSO Terna.

  • In total, renewable capacity in Italy reached 76.6GW - which includes, wind, hydro, solar and geothermal - surpassing the 2021-2024 target by 1.609GW. Renewables accounted for 40% of its power demand.
  • The small-scale storage growth was fuelled by fiscal incentives, while utility-scale installations thrived under long-term contracts in the capacity market framework.
  • Photovoltaic production was at 36.1TWh, with hydro generation increasing by 30.4%.
  • Coal-fired generation fell by 71%, contributing to a reduction of over 8mn/t of CO2 emissions.
  • However, electricity consumption in Italy increased by 2.2% in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching 312TWh.
  • The annual rise in electricity demand was mainly seen in July and August, driven by temperatures above the 10-year average.
  • Peak hourly demand reached 57.5GW on 18 July, with significant demand growth across all regions.
  • Italy's electricity imports grew by 2.4% on the year, while exports were up by 47.9%. Italian exports exceeded 4GW during certain hours in December, Terna added.
