Italy to Discount Power For Energy-Intensive Industry

POWER

Italy will auction 20TWh of electricity to energy-intensive industries at €60/MWh for three years, the environment minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said.

  • Previous reports stated the support will start from 2025. No specific has been announced.
  • Italy’s energy-intensive industry consumes around 60-70TWh of power per year.
  • “We are releasing an instrument aimed at supporting the transition of our industrial sector towards renewable energy sources,” the minister said last week.
  • The scheme will run via two-way contracts for difference. In return, companies must commit to building new renewable plants of at least 200KW of capacity or revamp existing plants within 40 months and then sell back the same amount of electricity over 20 years at the original discounted price according to Montel sources.
