US DATA PREVIEW
US DATA PREVIEW: January retail sales, due to be released at 8:30 am ET (12:30
GMT), are expected to fall by 0.1% based on both the Bloomberg consensus and an
MNI survey of analysts. This follows a very sharp December decline and reflects
soft January auto industry sales.
- Sales ex. motor vehicle are expected to rise by 0.2% by both Bloomberg and
MNI, with a further decline in gasoline offsetting rebounds in other categories
after December's across-the-board dips.
- There is an slight downside survey risk to overall sales and an upside risk to
sales ex. motor vehicles. Seasonal factors expect a post-holiday letdown in
unadjusted sales in January and add accordingly, so a larger-than-expected
rebound is possible.
