Japan Apr Retail Sales +2.9% Y/Y; 1st Rise In 3 Mths

  • Japanese retail sales rose 2.9% y/y in April, accelerating from the 0.7% y/y growth reported last month, marking the first increase in three months.
  • On a monthly basis, retail sales increased 0.8%.
  • General merchandise sales jumped 8.0% y/y, faster than the previous 1.9% y/y gain, while sales of fabric apparels and accessories increased 9.5% y/y after dropping 7.2% y/y in March.
  • Sales of food and beverages edged up 0.4% y/y, compared with the unchanged growth reported last month.
  • Fuel sales, another key driver, rose 13.9% y/y, slower from the previous 15.5% y/y growth.
  • Sales of machinery and equipment registered a rise of 1.6% y/y, after falling 3.3% y/y in March.
