Japan Seeks New LNG Supplies From Qatar

LNG

Japan’s natural gas buyers are in talks to agree new LNG supply contracts with Qatar, driven by energy security concerns according to people with knowledge of the matter.

  • Prime Minister Fumio Kishida plans to go to Qatar this month, the first visit in ten years by a Japanese premier.
  • Qatar is planning to boost its export capacity by 60% through 2027 and is looking for new supply agreements.
  • Japan has not signed a contract with Qatar since 2014, as the country was seeking more flexible suppliers. Qatar’s contracts are among the industry’s most rigid, and don’t allow for easy resale or diversion to other countries.
  • Qatar is currently offering prices that the Japanese firms deem as too high, sources said.
  • Japan is finding an increased need to diversify its sources of LNG imports highlighted by possible higher prices from Australia amid a change in policy and the introduction of the Safeguard Mechanism from 1 July. Japan currently sources more than 40% of its LNG from Australia.
