Jean-Pierre: Energy One Of Many Issues To Discuss With MBS

WHITE HOUSE

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has told reporters that "energy security is an important issue but it is not the only one" for President Biden to discuss with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman next month.

  • Jean Pierre's gaggle can be reviewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDUbzPuMAtY
  • Jean-Pierre avoids discussing if oil prices are the key motivation behind the meeting: "Saudi Arabia has been a strategic partner of the United States for over 80 years," and she says that the trip is to advance Israeli national security.
  • Jean-Pierre also sidesteps a question on whether Biden will bring up the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Kashoggi's directly with Mohammad Bin Salman: "We are not looking to rupture relations but human rights issues is something the President brings up with many leaders."
  • On the issue of tariffs which gained traction on wires this morning after an Axios article suggested that Biden was leaning towards the easing of tariffs: "Some Trump tariffs are irresponsible," says Jean Pierre, but she "doesn't have anything to share on the President's opinion on this," and declines to confirm if Biden will bring up tariffs in his speech at the AFL-CIO Quadrennial Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia later today.
