Jeffries-Dems Will Not Back MtV Against Speaker Johnson If MTG Invokes

US

US House of Representatives minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and other Democratic leaders have issued a statement saying that House Democrats will vote to table a Motion to Vacate against Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), and if the motion is invoked they will vote against it. The efforts to push a MtV against Johnson, spearheaded by Trumpist hardliner Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA), have come to naught in recent days after representatives went back to their states for a recess period.

  • Axios reports that a number of GOP representatives are now doubtful Taylor Greene will invoke the MtV to seek the removal of Johnson following the passage of the national security supplemental that provided billions in funding for Ukraine, Israel, and the US' allies in the Indo-Pacific.
  • While there are a number of House Freedom Caucus members seen as keen to seek Johnson's ouster, with the Democrats and moderate Republicans likely to back Johnson, any MtV in the short-term at least looks set to fail.
