Jera to Consider New LNG Deal with Qatar

LNG

Jera, Japan’s top power producer, is in discussions with Qatar to secure a long-term LNG supply contract, according to Bloomberg.

  • “If we could reach a win-win agreement, we’re very happy to sign with Qatar,” said Yukio Kani, CEO of Jera.
  • Jera did not renew its previous supply deal with Qatar which expired in 2021. It has not signed a contract with Qatar since 2014, instead looking to suppliers with more flexible contracts.
  • A deal with Jera would be beneficial to Qatar, which is lagging in its ambition to allocate all its expanded output through long-term contracts.
  • Qatar had locked in only 11.8m mtpa of its 48m mtpa expansion in long-term contracts, according to Platts Aug. 30.
