US DATA: Jobless Claims Dip To 1.48M, Missed Expectations

Claims filed through June 20 fell less than expected to 1.480 million from an
upward revised 1.540 million the week before. That takes the number of initial
claims filed since the Covid-19 pandemic was declared in mid-March to close to a
staggering 47 million workers. Continuing claims filed through June 13 dropped
by 767,000 to 19.522 million, while claimants of Pandemic Unemployment
Assistance (for gig workers and independent contractors) slipped to 728,120 from
770,920 a week earlier. This is the 14th straight week of new claims well above
1 million as the economy plunges into a pandemic-led recession.
