Joe Biden to Speak in Atlanta Tomorrow on Voter Rights

  • President Joe Biden will make a speech in Atlanta, Georgia tomorrow stressing the necessity of passing voter rights legislation. Biden’s speech is expected to be indirectly addressed to the two Democrat senators who have resisted supporting the push for voter rights.
  • Democrats are now banking on symbolism to convince Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) of the importance of bypassing the Senate filibuster. The date for the senate vote of January 17 (Martin Luther King Day) and Georgia's central role in the Civil Rights movement and both hoped to resonate with the Democrat senators.
  • The Democrats consider passing the legislation vital to boost support ahead of the 2022 midterms. This is especially important now as the future of Build Back Better remains uncertain.
  • The voter rights bill contains three pieces of separate legislation: The Freedom to Vote Act, The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and the Electoral Count Act.
