John Lee Wins Beijing's Support In Bid To Become Next Chief Executive

HONG KONG

John Lee has emerged as a sole candidate to replace Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam with the support of the Liaison Office of the People's Republic of China, KH01 reports without attribution.

  • Lee is the current Chief Secretary for Administration, effectively a number two in Hong Kong government.
  • HK01 reports that Lee will today hand in his resignation, which is expected to be swiftly approved to allow him to publicly announce his candidacy for the top job within a few days.
  • This comes after incumbent Chief Executive Carrie Lam said Monday that she would not seek a second term in office, adding that she had already informed Beijing about her decision.
