Johnson Faces PMQs As 'Partygate' Pressure Builds

UK

Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces PMQs in the House of Commons a day after a lenthy questioning session in the House regarding his recieving of a fixed penalty notive from police having broken COVID-19 lockdown rules in 2020.

  • Livestream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvCEFb-ZD20
  • PM Johnson looks to be in a marginally more stable position today, having held what has been reported as a well-recieved meeting with Conservative backbench MPs last night. A total of 54 Conservative MPs (15% of the total) must submit letters to the chairman of the 1922 Committee to trigger a leadership contest. At present it seems that the number calling openly for Johnson to go is well short of that number.
  • Data from Smarkets shows bettors continue to view the scenario of Johnson remaining in office to 2024 or later as the most likely outcome of the current situation, but there has been a small but steady increase in the implied probabilty of Johnson leaving office in 2022. The implied probability of Johnson leaving office in 2022 is up to 33.3%, from 22.7% on 9 April.
