Jordan Set To Lose Second Speaker Ballot

House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) has dropped five votes in the rollcall to elect a new speaker. Due to the razor thin Republican majority in the House, those votes mean he is almost certain to lose his second ballot in two days, barring the unlikely event of a Democrat rebellion of unforeseen absences.

  • Considering the rigidness of opposition, Jordan is unlikely to call for an immediate third speaker vote. The House will likely now recess while Republican consider a proposition to elevate Speaker Pro Tem Patrick McHenry (R-NC) to the chair in the short-term, likely through January, with enhanced powers.
