Key Lawmakers For The US Response To Russia

US

These are the members of Congress to watch as the US coordinates its response to the Russian military operation in Ukraine. If the Biden administration intends to level highest possible sanctions on Russia then it will require some level of Congressional support.

  • Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and James Risch (R-ID): The chair and ranking members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The two senators failed to come to an agreement on sanctions leading up to the invasion but it likely that a response to the invasion will be more bipartisan and swifter.
  • Senators Mark Warner (D-VA) and Marco Rubio (R-FL): The chair and ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Rubio has been active on twitter before and after the invasion and is setting himself up a key player in the Congressional response.
  • Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Chris Coons (D-DE), and Rob Portman (R-OH): Have been active on issues regarding Ukraine. They will be instrumental in shaping policy.
  • House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). So far the Congressional leaders have been relatively quiet and appear to be taking their cues from the White House but they will set the Congressional schedule.
