Kishida Claims "Positive Moves Appearing" In Japanese Economy

JAPAN

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida speaking at an end-of-parliamentary session press conference claims that "Positive moves are appearing in Japan's economy". Says that his gov't "Will create [a] new investment package for areas including semiconductors and energy".

  • Kishida: "[We are] aiming for a V-shaped recovery in inbound tourists by 2025." Kishida: "We can't miss chance to increase wages."
  • Kishida on foreign policy:
    • Confirms that he will attend NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania in July. This will be followed by visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE. Given Japan's heavy reliance on imported LNG, retaining close links with Gulf states a prerequisite for Tokyo.
    • Says that he "Will continue to keep channels of dialogue open with China." States that he "Hopes to have a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un in the near future."
