Cabinet Line-Up Takes Shape With Kishida Set To Take Office

JAPAN

LDP leader Fumio Kishida will be appointed Japan's Prime Minister during an extraordinary session of the National Diet today. Kishida is expected to launch his cabinet as soon as this evening, once the new coalition government is formed at the swearing-in ceremony in the Imperial Palace. The draft line-up of the Kishida Cabinet has been taking shape over the last few days, amid a parallel rejig of ruling party executive officials unveiled Friday.

  • Takayuki Kobayashi will be given the new Economic Security portfolio, expected to be largely China-centric. Kyodo sources described the creation of the post as a "veiled counter to alleged technology theft by China," while LDP Secretary General Amari noted that the minister "should be able to give instructions to all ministries and agencies."
  • Kishida will likely make good on his promise to promote younger and mid-career (in relative terms) lawmakers rather than party veterans. As many as 13 out of 20 members of his cabinet will be first-time ministers.
  • Junior coalition partner Komeito will retain the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism portfolio, but Kazuyoshi Akaba will be replaced by Tetsuo Saito.
The table below outlines most notable nominations, as touted by Japanese media outlets over the weekend. Note that the nominations have not been formally confirmed and the following list is based solely on press reports.
