Kishida To Meet With Biden In Washington As Soon As January 13

US-JAPAN

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is expected to travel to Washington to meet US President Joe Biden as soon as January 13, according to a report published by Reuters.

  • Kishida is expected to discuss Japan's new security strategy unveiled last month designed to dramatically strengthen the Japanese military and pivot away from the pacifist constitution which has guided policy since the Second World War.
  • Japan has assumed the presidency of the G7 and will host the G7 Leaders' summit in Hiroshima in May, which Biden is expected to attend.
  • Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Yoshimasa Hayashi said in December that Japan will use the G7 presidency to apply pressure on Russia to halt its war in Ukraine.
  • Hayashi: "Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine is a clear violation of international law. It is an unacceptable and outrageous act threatening the very foundation of the international order."
  • Reuters: "Japan's presidency of the G7 industrial democracies in 2023 and its return for a two-year stint as a non-permanent Security Council member will give it a more conspicuous international platform to voice its concerns."
