Kishida-Zelenskyy To Join Summit Session Via Videolink

G7

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has confirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will join a session of the G7 summit on Sunday 21 May via videolink, quashing speculation that Zelenskyy might attend the summit in person.

  • Kishida states that he 'agreed with US President Biden that we will continue Russian sanctions and support for Ukraine'. Adds that 'we affirmed that it's important to work together on common issues regarding China'.
  • Kishida says the summit is being 'held at a moment when we are at a crossroads of history'.
  • The summit is being held in the historically significant city of Hiroshima (the constituency Kishida represents in the House of Representatives), and the PM is believed to be seeking to address the issue of nuclear disarmament at the summit.
  • However, general reports are that none of the G7 nuclear powers present (US, UK, France) are willing to hold in-depth talks on the topic.
