Kremlin-Putin & Raisi 'Discussed Interaction, Cooperation In OPEC+'

RUSSIA

Wires carrying comments from Kremlin spox Dmitry Peskov, states that during yesterday's visit to Moscow by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi he discussed with President Vladimir Putin 'Interaction and cooperation within OPEC+'. Iran is not a member of OPEC+, and Putin's discussions with Raisi on the topic could garner some blowback from Russia's OPEC+ partner, Saudi Arabia, which despite the resumption of bilateral relations remains a regional rival to Iran.

  • On the war in Ukraine, Peskov states that 'Washington is ensuring that the conflict in Ukraine supports its own economic interests.' When asked about the idea the US wants Russia to engage in peace negotiations w/Ukraine on Kyiv's terms in 2024, Peskov calls this 'absolutely unrealistic'.
  • Following the confirmation that the presidential election will take place on 17 March 2024, Peskov states that 'lots of people' are urging Putin to run again. It is widely assumed that Putin will run (effectively unopposed) and win another term, but he has not officially confirmed the run yet.
