Reuters reporting comments from Kremlin spox Dmitry Peskov. In response to US President-elect Donald Trump's remarks on 9 Jan that "[Putin] wants to meet and we are setting it up," Peskov says that President Vladimir Putin "has repeatedly said that he is open to contacts with Trump," but that there are no details on a possible meeting yet. Says a "mutual desire to talk and solve problems is needed along with political will," and that Russia "welcomes Trump's stated desire to solve problems through talks." Peskov says "it looks like there will be developments on a possible Trump-Putin meeting once Trump takes office on 20 Jan." Peskov: "Russia's negotiating stance on Ukraine is well known."
- Regarding the latest package of military support for Ukraine Pekov says that the "Biden administration is determined to use its final days in power to ensure the war in Ukraine continues." Kremlin: "The Biden administration is trying to leave the most toxic legacy it can for Trump and his allies...It is therefore possible that another US sanctions package on Russia will be introduced by the Biden administration."
- The FT reported on 9 Jan of a shift in Trump's language regarding the war in Ukraine, noting the president-elect "has pushed back his campaign pledge to end the war in Ukraine in “24 hours” to several months, in a shift European partners have interpreted as a sign that his administration will not immediately abandon support for Kyiv."
