Labour Holds Largest Lead Over Tories Since 2014: Observer Poll

UK

The Labour Party surged into a nine-point lead over the ruling Conservatives in the latest Opinium poll for the Observer, as a series of scandals have left Boris Johnson fighting for his premiership.

  • The survey put Labour on 41%, with the Tories lagging at 32%, their lowest score since 2019. The Liberal Democrats are on 9% (+1pp), the SNP on 5% (unch.) and the Greens on 5% (-1pp).
  • More than half (57%) of voters now think Johnson should step down, up 9pp from two weeks ago. The Prime Minister's personal net approval rating fell 14pp to a fresh record low of -35%.
  • The Downing Street Christmas Party held last year when London was in lockdown topped the list of most shocking Covid-19-related scandals. In addition, 60% of voters believe that the UK will enter another lockdown within three months.
  • Adam Drummond of Opinium told the Observer that many former Conservative voters had moved to the undecided column, adding that “unless the Conservatives can turn these numbers around quickly, backbenchers might start asking if the party is over for the prime minister.”
