Late Equities Roundup: Chip Stocks Buoy IT Sector

  • US Stocks remain weaker in late trade, S&P Eminis off lows with Information Technology sector shares continuing to outperform. Currently, DJIA is down 297.91 points (-0.79%) at 37294.75, S&P E-Mini futures down 23.75 points (-0.49%) at 4792.75, Nasdaq down 56.1 points (-0.4%) at 14916.46.
  • Leading gainers: IT and Consumer Discretionary sector shares outperformed in late trade, semiconductor shares supporting the former: Advanced Micro Devices +7.5% following multiple upgrades tied to AI benefits/demand. Similarly, Nvidia gained +2.79%, Micron +2%.
  • Meanwhile, Consumer Discretionary sector outpaced Real Estate stocks that had led in the first half. Auto makers and part suppliers firmer: Borg Warner +0.75%, Tesla +0.64%.
  • Laggers: Energy and Materials sectors continued to underperform late, broad based weakness in oil, gas and servicing shares weighing on the former: EQT Corp -3.52%, APA Corp -3.15%, EOG Resources -3.07%, Marathon Oil -2.8%. Meanwhile, metals and mining shares weighed on Materials: Freeport-McMoRan -4.9%, Newmont -3.67%.
  • Reminder: Corporate earnings resume Wednesday with Citizens Financial, Charles Schwab, US Bancorp and Discovery Financial expected. PNC, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley reported this morning.
