Latest Poll Shows PM's Party Still On Course For Majority

GREECE

The latest opinion polling ahead of the 25 June snap general election shows PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis' centre-right New Democracy (ND) party still on course to win an overall majority in parliament. The MRB poll, carried out from 6-7 June shows ND would win 161 seats in the 300-member parliament if the result were reflected in the election, up from the 146 won in the 21 May vote.

  • The re-implementation of the 'enhanced proportional' electoral system is crucial to ND's prospects of winning a majority, with the system to be used on 25 June providing a bonus of seats to the party winning the most votes dependent on the size of its vote share.
  • Should the latest seat projections be reflected in the final result it would be the worst result for the leftist SYRIZA of former PM Alexis Tsipras since the May 2012 general election in which the party won 52 seats. This projection coming to fruition would also see the Orthodox fundamentalist, Russophile Democratic Patriotic Movement–Victory (NIKI) and the left-wing eurosceptic Course of Freedom (PE) enter parliament for the first time.
