Lavrov in Cape Town to Represent Russia in BRICS Summit

  • May manufacturing PMI rose to 53.5 from 52.6.
  • A summit of BRICS Foreign Ministers including Sergei Lavrov starts in Cape Town today. Chief diplomats from the five member states will discuss issues ranging from the bloc's proposed expansion and the potential establishment of a common currency. On the second day of the conference, they will be joined virtually by their 15 counterparts from "Africa and the Global South".
  • Part of the summit will be devoted to laying the groundwork for the BRICS leaders' meeting in August, with Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit still hanging in the air.
  • President Putin is set to meet with Russian families at some point Thursday, while PM Mishustin and deputy FinMin Sazanov attend government events and Duma sessions.
