Lavrov: Russia Favours 'Stable & Consistent' Relations w/China

Speaking to his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in the Chinese city of Tunxi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that Russia is "interested in our relations with China developing steadily and consistently" according to state-run outlet Tass. Comes as there remains major focus on Beijing's next move in relation to the war in Ukraine and the schism between Russia and the West.

  • China has made little indication of its future intentions vis-a-vis Russian relations. In the West there has been significant concern that China could supply military or financial assistance to Russia. However, the Russian failure swiftly knock out the Ukrainian military is likely have caused significant concerns in Beijing about Moscow's strategic capabilities.
  • Lavrov's comments come ahead of a ministerial conference of Afghanistan's neighbouring countries taking place 31 March.
